Laptops promise for teachers.

Hi everybody
If the promise is true!! to give teachers laptops for teaching,learning and administrating they school work, then our current state in education will drastically change before 2014 for the better because this perfect tool to be used by a teacher anywhere and any time. I can't wait for that moment to come. I'm really fascinated and encouraged by that promise of getting the laptop.

    You need to investigate what your school or district is doing about it and begin your own investigation on the package (i.e total price, minimum requirements, who can give you the best deal and support), etc. Check which shops will be looking for your business almost everyday - it will be interesting?

    I need to get some ideas.

  2. Tom, such devices are meant for people like you who understand why it is so essential to utilise the ICT devices in teaching and learning.

  3. Both comments are of importance. If you check schedule 1 of the government gazette no 32207 volume 527 published on the 8th May you will find the minimum requirement for the package. They say for pricing , the allowance is based on a costing of minimum specifications in Schedule A estimated at R11 750 made up of Hardware @R4000,00 Software(discounted )@R350, insurance @ R1200 and connectivity @ R6000.00.

    Yes, although Mofundi said that it is meant for people like you who understand why it is so essential to utilises the ICT devises I think the gazette also give the following provisions under software and immage for teacher development materials that are to be included in the laptop package.

    1.Microsoft Digital Literacy(teach and assess basic computer concepts and skills so that people can use computer technology in everyday life) ; and
    2. Microsoft Partners in learning will provide

    * ICT Skills for Teachers (introduce new users to ICT Skill in the context of their roles as teachers)

    * One Step Further (develop the information skills and take teachers one step further in their developing ICT literacy)

    * ICT Integration (Webquests0
    * ICT Leadership for Education Managers
    * 21st Century School Leadership
    * Peer Coaching

    In my opinion I think after we graduated from our current studies we will be one of the fortunate people to have most of the skills that are envisaged in the teacher laptop initiatives. So let us try by all means to participate in what our lectures in ICT are modeling us to be the best honous graduate in our field.

    One issue that I think is of importance and the Department had not address is the issue of projectors .Without a projector or the white board it will just reduced the initiatives only for administrative purpose and not be fully functional. This was just my opinion .What do you think of this issue of projectors and the fact that most of the educators are computer illiterate ? Don't you think massive training is needed ?
